Huracán might be in a relegation battle in the Primera but were not supposed to struggle so badly against Primera C side Defensores Unidos. After a 2-2 draw, El Globo were grateful that the lower league opposition completely lost their cool in the penalty shoot-out and blazed three of their four efforts off target.
Some woeful defending twice allowed Defensores to lead, first through Maxi Ortigoza and after half time, Javier Velázquez but on each occasion Diego Mendoza pulled Huracán level.
The tie was forced to penalties and as the Primera side were perfect in their execution, the side from Argentina’s fourth-tier were wild. Three bad misses sent El Globo into the last 32, where either Colón or Independiente Rivadavia lie in wait.
A little earlier in Quilmes, Banfield required a late Emanuel Cecchini goal to see off Federal A side, Chaco For Ever.
Cecchini had rattled the crossbar during the first half but arrived on the edge of the box in the 75th minute to rifle the ball into the net.
Banfield will face either Atlético de Rafaela or Almagro in the last 32.
