Without the injured Fernando Zampedri and Cristian Menéndez, Atlético Tucumán were supposed to have lost their firepower but there were no such worries on Friday evening as El Decano put three past Banfield to slow the momentum of Julio César Falcioni’s side.

Banfield arrived in Tucumán having won four on the bounce without conceding a goal and in the knowledge that victory could put them just a point behind league leaders Boca Juniors.

However, those planned were scrapped when the home side sliced through the Taladro defence and Fabio Álvarez skipped around Hilario Navarro to open the scoring.

Moments after half time a superb solo effort by Leandro González doubled the lead and with the final whistle looming, David Barbona tucked away the third from the penalty spot.

Given the injury blows Atlético have had, the victory is a huge boost ahead of a must-win Copa Libertadores clash next week.
