Shakhtar Donetsk made a winning start to the Ukrainian football season on Saturday with victory over Dynamo Kyiv to lift the Super Cup thanks to Chucky Ferreyra’s brace.
As the current league and cup champions, Shakhtar faced old rivals Dynamo Kyiv, who finished as runners-up in the league, in Odesa and despite there being little between the two sides, two poacher’s finishes decided the tie.
Ferreyra, Shakhtar’s leading scorer last season, struck from close range early in both halves to seal the win and get his and the club’s season off to the perfect start.
Since the Super Cup’s inception in 2004, only Shakhtar and Dynamo Kyiv have lifted the title but it is the Miners from Donetsk that have now won it a record eight times.
