In the thick of the relegation battle and following a deserved opening weekend defeat, Huracán were in desperate need of a win from the first home match of the season and thankfully a beleaguered Newell’s side obliged.
On a dreadful pitch at the Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó, it was the visitors who came closest to opening the scoring with Luis Leal sliding a shot just wide of the post. However, in first half stoppage time, El Globo led when Ignacio Pussetto threw himself at a cross from the left to head past Luciano Pocrnjic from close range.
Lively youngster Joaquín Torres rattled the Huracán crossbar with a stunning long range effort but La Lepra couldn’t find an equaliser.
Earlier in Santa Fe, Unión earned a first win of the Superliga season with a 1-0 victory over Gimnasia.
A game of few clear cut chances, mostly coming from set-pieces, was settled by Franco Soldano’s first half goal. The young striker bundled in from only a few yards out and it was enough for the home side to hold on for all three points.
