Zenit St Petersburg suffered a shock cup exit against city rivals and second division club Dynamo St Petersburg but that didn’t prevent Leandro Paredes making headlines with a sensational 35-yard strike.
Zenit, the three-time champions, were dealt an early blow when defender Miha Mevlja was harshly sent off in the tenth minute and found themselves two-down before half time thanks to goals from Artem Kulishev’s and Maksim Barsov.
However, Paredes kick started the comeback with a fierce shot from distance that swerved past Denis Kniga in the Dynamo goal.
A minute later and former Independiente forward Emiliano Rigoni headed the ball into the path of Dmitry Poloz to equalise and this forced the tie into extra time.
Sebastian Driussi fashioned a wonderful chance to win it after exchanging passes with Rigoni but screwed his effort wide before Artyom Kulishev won it for Dynamo from the penalty spot.
Disappointment for Zenit to fall at the last 16 but great to see the Argentinian contingent so prominent.
