Argentinos Juniors finished comfortably ahead of Chacarita Juniors in the Nacional B last season as both secured promotion but after a turbulent window there have been big changes in La Paternal. Despite this, Los Bichos secured a repeat of the result when they met in the second tier and with the win moved well clear of the relegation zone.
Argentinos Juniors’ victory over Racing last week had already set the ball rolling while Chacarita are still waiting for their first three points back in the top flight so regardless of the fact that this was a fixture rearranged from the opening weekend, the significance was already huge in the descenso table.
Los Bichos started the brighter and led after 27 minutes when a neat move down the right was eventually cut back to Nicolás González, who side-footed the ball past Pedro Fernández.
It wasn’t until after half time that Chacarita began to look dangerous but amid a host of missed chances and Matías Rodríguez bending the ball against the crossbar, the equaliser never came.
Argentinos held on for a valuable three points and with it rocketed up the descenso table. Chacarita sit bottom but given the two clubs’ lack of games both know those averages can change quickly.
