After the bitter disappointment of their Copa Libertadores semi final exit and Superclásico defeat, River Plate were in desperate need of a lift. With victory over Nacional B outfit Deportivo Morón, Marcelo Gallardo’s secured just that and more importantly set up a Copa Argentina final against Atlético Tucumán.
River’s full strength side gave a clear indication of the importance and as expected Los Millonarios were superior to the second-tier underdogs.
That being said Morón, who have already dumped three Superliga clubs out, drew a fine save from Germán Lux early on.
The decisive moment came in the 39th minute when Nacho Fernández avoided a linesman’s flag to tuck River in front and put behind a dreadful couple of weeks for the midfielder.
Morón perhaps needed the break but found themselves further down after Jonathan Maidana slid in a second.
There was to be no way back for the plucky Gallos and instead Rafael Santos Borré wrapped up River’s victory late on.
River will now face Atlético Tucumán for the opportunity to retain their Copa Argentina title, while El Decano celebrate a place in the 2018 Copa Libertadores already.
