Alejandro Gómez fired Atalanta into the Coppa Italia semi final on Tuesday evening as La Dea managed to beat Serie A leaders Napoli at the San Paolo.
Timothy Castagne had given Atalanta the lead but it was ten minutes from time when Papu dashed away from Vlad Chiriches and blasted the ball into the top corner from an acute angle.
Dries Mertens headed a goal back minutes later but Napoli were unable to force an equaliser.
Atalanta have won the Coppa Italia once in their history back in 1963 but ahead of a semi final against either Juventus or Torino, the club can dream of lifting the trophy once more. Papu’s status as a cult hero is already in no doubt but if the captain could lead Atalanta to the title, it would be a crowning moment.
