The round’s big game took place on Sunday afternoon at the Nuevo Gasómetro where first played second and a potentially, irretrievable nine-point gap could have been opened up. Despite San Lorenzo ending the game with nine men, Boca Juniors couldn’t manage that and their frantic 1-1 draw leaves the reigning champions still only six clear at the top.
Talleres moved up to third after a narrow win over Temperley and Independiente battled to victory away to Colón to go fifth as the pair were the only two to claim three points from the top seven.
The weekend’s other big stories were the individual performances of Ignacio Scocco and Lautaro Martínez. The River Plate striker may no longer be under consideration for Argentina but produced a goal that Lionel Messi would be proud of in a win over Olimpo. River may not have particularly impressed but Scocco scored twice to ensure a vital three points and breathe optimism that once the new players are settled, vast improvements will follow.
Martínez has long been considered one for Argentina’s future but with Jorge Sampaoli in attendance at the Cilindro on Sunday night, the 20-year-old suggested he could be part of La Albiceleste’s present. A stunning hat-trick gave Racing a 4-0 win over Huracán and the impression left on Sampaoli and the Inter Milan directors in attendance will have been lasting.
There was no real change in the relegation battle but Chacarita Juniors at least provided some hope and at the same time gave Vélez Sarsfield a wake-up call with victory on Monday.
