Newell’s Old Boys got the win that was needed last night at home in Rosario and took a huge step towards the knockout stages of this year’s Copa Libertadores. Fresh from winning Golazo’s Player of the Month Ignacio Scocco proved to be the match winner as they defeated Deportivo Lara of Venezuela 3 – 1. FOR THE OTHER GOALS AND MORE….
Newell’s got off to the perfect start as Scocco turned provider. His first time cross was volleyed into the ground by Pablo Perez but the ball bounced awkwardly over goalkeeper, Alan Liebeskind to give Newell’s the lead and settle any nerves. Just before half time, Scocco got himself on the score sheet with a fine finish. Although, Lara made things a little uncomfortable with a goal back in the 78th minute through Edgar Perez Greco, the night belonged to Scocco. With two minutes remaining he picked the ball up in his own half and then beat the entire Lara defence before firing into the bottom corner. A truly wonderful goal and a great way to almost guarantee qualification.
Newell’s need only a point from their final game against Olimpia, who themselves have already qualified. Even a defeat would still require third placed, Universidad de Chile to make up a considerable goal difference deficit.
Elsewhere, in Group 3, Sao Paulo lost in Bolivia when they travelled to play The Strongest. Their 2 – 1 defeat means that The Strongest have jumped into the second spot above Arsenal and Sao Paulo. Atletico Miniero have obviously won the group so it all comes down to the final game. Arsenal host The Strongest and Sao Paulo welcome Atletico Miniero.
