Saturday: Not a lot of goals but Independiente are the big losers

A crucial win for Atletico Rafaela in the relegation fight

After Friday night’s defeat to All Boys, Independiente were praying that results went their way over the rest of the weekend. Sadly for the Avellaneda giants that wasn’t to be and they now face a mammoth task to aviod being relegated for the first time in the club’s history. Atletico Rafaela managed to win 3 – 1 away to Tigre moving them further towards safety and Quilmes and San Martin drew 0 – 0, both avoiding defeat is again a hammer blow for Independiente. Elsewhere, Velez Sarsfield drew 1 -1 with San Lorenzo, a point gifted to San Lorenzo by Velez keeper, Sebastian Sosa in the last minute. There were two further goal less draws when Union hosted Argentinos Juniors and when Godoy Cruz were held by Belgrano.  In doing so Godoy Cruz failed to draw level with leaders Lanus. ALL THE GOALS (or lack of) HERE….

Tigre’s week took a turn for the worse yesterday afternoon, following defeat in the Copa Libertadores, this was their third consecutive loss in the league. Rafaela got off to a great start when Sebastian Carrera turned home a low cross from close range after just 6 minutes. Perhaps they should have led by more at the break but soon after half time their profligacy was punished when Tigre equalised through Diego Cisterna. 8 minutes later Tigre were reduced to 10 men when Matias Perez Garcia was sent off for a wild two footed tackle. This handed the momentum to Rafaela and they seized it. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Jonathan Lopez nodded them in front and deep into stoppage time Lopez got his second of the day to wrap things up.

San Lorenzo certainly looked the fresher team as Velez looked to be suffering from a Libertadores hangover in the first half. Despite this, it was Velez who took the lead when Ezequiel Rescaldani stabbed the ball in at the back post from a fiercely hit low cross. 5 minutes later, San Lorenzo were handed the opportunity to equalise but Denis Stracqualursi made a mess of the penalty and blazed it over the top. However, Velez keeper, Sebastian Sosa was determined that San Lorenzo left Liniers with a point and with 10 minutes remaining he horribly misjudged a free kick and allowed the ball to bounce over him into the empty net.

Another goalless draw but Argentinos remain unbeaten since Caruso took over and are now virtually safe from relegation. Union meanwhile have improved but are still destined to be relegated.

Godoy Cruz missed the opportunity to put some pressure on leaders Lanus but in truth this could have been worse as it was Belgrano who could have won it. Facundo Quiroga missed from the penalty spot and Martin Zapata hit the crossbar as Martin Palermo’s side held on for a point.

The draw does little to help either side and for the time being San Martin remain in the bottom three while Quilmes hover just above, happy that Independiente was again failed to pick up 3 points.
