Independiente’s improvement under Omar de Felippe, evident in the fact that they haven’t lost yet, continued yesterday in Corboda. Two wonderful goals from captain, Rolfi Montenegro almost won it for El Rojo but Tallares de Cordoba were good value for the draw. The meeting between these two sides is significant as it is a rematch of one of the most important matches in Independiente’s glorious history. In 1977, Independiente defeated Tallares de Cordoba to win the National Championship (There is an article about that game here). A 2-2 draw that day 35 years ago was enough to win the two legged tie on away goals and although yesterday’s game was infinitely less important it was entertaining all the same. For the second week running, Independiente fell behind early to a poorly defended set piece. Elvio Fredrich’s inswinging free kick evaded everyone and sneaked in at Diego Rodriguez’s far post to give Tallares the lead. The rest of the first half was fairly even but it was a minute before the break that Independiente drew level. Captain, Rolfi Montenegro let fly from 30 yards and his rocket of a shot left Pablo Santillo no hope.
Minutes after the break and Rolfi did it again. This time, the veteran captain, expertly met a corner from the right with a fine right footed volley. It looked as if this might be enough for a valuable away win but it obviously wasn’t to be. A defensive lapse allowed Juan Sanchez Sotelo, former Racing player to add further misery, to equalise.
Independiente remain 8th in the table and have learnt pretty quickly that the Nacional B is not an easy division to get out from. Banfield now lead the rankings but Defensa y Justicia can reclaim top spot if they win on Monday night.
