Argentinos Juniors will end the year in the drop zone after another defeat last night in La Paternal which prompted manager, Caruso Lombardi to hand-in his resignation. Rosario Central picked up a valuable 2-1 win ending a 4-game winless streak and keeping them safely away from relegation. Later, in Santa Fe, Atletico Rafaela and Arsenal ended their campaigns with a 1-1 draw. For both sides the Torneo Inicial has been a success, as they kept pace with the title challengers and Arsenal captured the Copa Argentina. WATCH THE HIGHLIGHTS HERE….
ARGENTINOS JUNIORS 1 – 2 ROSARIO CENTRAL
In what could be a crucial relegation encounter, Argentinos Juniors slipped to a damaging defeat and although the board have not accepted Caruso Lombardi’s resignation, things are looking a little bleak in La Paternal.
Sebastián Abreu gave Central the lead just before the break from the penalty spot and despite Hernán Boyero’s equaliser 5 minutes after half time, it was Central who left with the points.
A long ball over the top was completely misjudged by Argentinos keeper, Pablo Migliore and allowed youngster, Walter Acuña to slot the ball into the unguarded net.
The board have asked Caruso to think about his resignation and obviously remain keen on the veteran coach but the indication is that Argentinos will be looking for new manager ahead of a huge Torneo Final.
ATLETICO RAFAELA 1 – 1 ARSENAL
The kick off in Santa Fe was delayed due to a lack of police, apparently unhappy with not being paid but after 30 minutes the match got underway.
A fairly even game with neither side able to carve out any great openings eventually came to life when the ever-dangerous strike duo of Diego Vera and Lucas Albertengo caused havoc in the Arsenal penalty box. Vera battled away and eventually lobbed the ball over Cristian Campestrini and allowed Albertengo to head in his sixth of the season.
However, Arsenal came back and Mariano Echeverria’s close range header ensured the points were shared.
