Mutu in action for Ajaccio

Racing President, Victor Blanco has admitted to looking at controversial Romanian striker, Adrian Mutu ahead of the transfer window. Mutu is currently in France with Ajaccio and although he had previously hinted at retirement, Racing hope to tempt with a move to Argentina.

Mutu’s wife is Argentine and so he is a Spanish speaker making the move perhaps more possible and having scored 11 goals last season, the Romanian still has something to offer a Primera division side in Argentina.

The career of Mutu has been disrupted by a number of high-profile discretions despite his undoubted paying ability.

An early career move from his native Romania to play in Italy made him a national star and it was his impressive performances with Parma that prompted Chelsea to pay in excess of  €22 million for him.

However, after testing positive for cocaine his contract was terminated and he returned to Italy to play for Juventus. This transfer and the subsequent dealings with Livorno are still an issue as both sides have been ruled to be liable to pay compensation to Chelsea.

A move to Fiorentina represented happier times for Mutu, as he rediscovered his best form and after 3 successful season in Florence, controversy again caught up with him. Another failed doping test saw Mutu banned for the second time and since then he has played for Cesena and now for Ajaccio.

His international career is also over after he posted a photo of the Romanian coach, Victor Piţurcă with the photo-shopped head of Mr Bean.

Mutu’s quality as a player is or was unquestionable but do Racing need such a character at the club? This season has been fairly disastrous for Racing and although things have improved since the return of manager, Mostaza Merlo, a player who could rock the boat may not be ideal.
