River Plate took a substantial step towards claiming the Torneo Final, their first top flight title since Diego Simeone’s 2008 Clausura, with a 2-0 win over relegated, Argentinos Juniors in La Paternal. Second half goals by Gabriel Mercado and Teó Gutierréz mean that a win in El Monumental against Quilmes will guarantee the crown. In part this is due to Gimnasia‘s earlier defeat in Quilmes. Heavy rain made playing conditions less than desirable and a goalkeeping error by Fernando Monetti gifted Quilmes the lead and a win which keeps them in the Primera División. Meanwhile in La Bombonera, Boca Juniors defeated Lanús in what may end up being Juan Román Riquelme’s last game. Goals from Emanuel Gigliotti, Nicolás Colazo and Claudio Riaño moved Boca up to fourth and a possible second place finish but it was Riquelme who stole the show. Another Man of the Match performance and his declaration that he would like to play until he is 40 have made things a little uncomfortable for President, Daniel Angelici, who seems less enthusiastic about a new contract. Sunday’s other game between Belgrano and Arsenal ended goalless. WATCH ALL THE ACTION….
