A Rodrigo Depetris header and some curious refereeing decisions saw Colón relegated to the Nacional B in Rosario yesterday afternoon. With safety on the line it was always going to be a tense affair and despite Jorge Burruchaga’s claims that Atlético “deserved it”, the truth was that certain decisions made a huge impact on the game.
Atlético edged a close first half with Diego Vera coming closest to breaking the deadlock but it was in the 57th minute that the first blow was dealt. Colón failed to clear their lines and a clipped cross from the left was headed past Germán Montoya by Rodrigo Depetris.
Colón needed to react quickly but were given a mountain to climb when Jacobo Mansilla was shown a straight red card for an innocuous collision in the air less than 10 minutes after falling behind.
Diego Osella’s, Colón side continued to battle but unlike their dramatic late goal on the final day, they were unable to find a way through. The defeat meant they joined Argentinos Juniors and All Boys in the Nacional B and ended their 19-year-spell in the Primera.
