Superclásico victory for River in México (VIDEO)

River celebrate their penalty victory

It appears judging by the swathes of empty seats inside the Estadio Azteca last night that Mexicans cared as little about an Argentine “friendly” Superclásico, less than two weeks before the World Cup as the rest of us. In spite of this, under strength and most likely under motivated River Plate and Boca Juniors sides clashed in the name of money once again.

Keko Villalba gave River a first half lead after being put through on goal by an excellent defence splitting pass by Manuel Lanzini and except for a late penalty appeal when Vangioni tumbled in the box, causing both sides to get a bit hot under the collar there was little to report.

Claudio Riaño scored from close range after the break and with the game locked at 1-1 it was decided that a penalty shootout was required. Supposedly because the sponsors had bought a meaningless trophy that needed to be handed out.

River won the shootout 4-2 with Cristian Ledesma tucking away the winner.
