Valencia set to land Balanta and provide River with funds

Colombia international, Balanta finally looks set for River exit

Reports from Spain suggest that Valencia are close to agreeing a deal with River Plate for the transfer of 21-year-old, Colombian defender, Éder Álvarez Balanta. A €6.5 million deal is said to be agreed which would end months of speculation surrounding the youngster and provide River with crucial funds to strengthen.

Almost since the day Éder Álvarez Balanta made his River debut there has been no end of speculation about where he might end up. Barcelona, Liverpool and even West Ham United were recently making enquiries into the talented youngster.

However, it now seems Valencia have won the race for one of world football’s most promising defenders. With River desperate for money, Los Che have discussed a bid of €6.5 million which is likely to match River’s valuation.

Valencia’s wealthy new owners are overseeing a new era in the Mestalla and having already signed Rodrigo De Paul from Racing, Balanta could be their second summer signing from the Primera. Certainly, in Balanta they are purchasing a player who has the potential to be one of the best defenders in Europe.

For River, the injection of money should enable them to increase their offer for Vélez Sarsfield striker, Lucas Pratto. One bid has already been rejected by Vélez but with the league season just days away, Marcelo Gallardo is desperate for further attacking options.

With Fernando Cavanaghi currently injured, David Trezeguet exiled and discussions on-going to persuade Colombian, Teófilo Gutiérrez to stay, River are left with just a trio of teenage strikers.
