Following the collapse of Ángel Di María’s proposed transfer to Paris St Germain, it is now being reported that Manchester United are willing to offer Real Madrid £55 million for the 26-year-old midfielder.

The Express have caught on to comments from journalists in Argentina that have reported the mammoth offer from United and the five-year, £120,000-a-week deal that Di María will be offered.

The transfer of Di María has dragged on for weeks and the end is not yet any nearer with the latest round of speculation. However, what is clear is that Di María’s position in Madrid is under threat following the signings of James Rodríguez and Toni Kroos and that Louis van Gaal is a big admirer of the Argentine.

Manchester United have made it clear that van Gaal has no real financial restrictions on his transfer plans and so if the Dutchman feels that Di María is central to his plans for the coming season then even at such an enormous fee, a deal could be struck.

Earlier in the week, Paris St Germain president Nasser Al Khelaifi confirmed that his side had withdrawn from negotiations: “We discussed Angel Di Maria with Real Madrid. He was very expensive and we have stopped discussions.”

While this is obviously true, the situation for Paris was made more complicated by their inability to abide by UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations. This is not the case for Manchester United and so if Real Madrid are looking to off-load Di María then we may yet see this transfer completed.
