Amid speculation around his future, Angel Di María has travelled with the rest of the Real Madrid squad to Cardiff for Tuesday’s European Super Cup Final against Sevilla. Meanwhile, Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal fuelled transfer rumours when he mentioned Di María by name on the subject of the weaknesses in his current squad.

Tuesday’s European Super Cup will give Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti the first opportunity to assemble his line-up of superstars. Despite the additions of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos, Angel Di María has also been summoned and is likely to play some part in Cardiff.

Since Madrid brought in these players over the summer, the future of Di María has been the subject of intense speculation.

The 26-year-old was reportedly close to a switch to Paris St Germain before their Qatari backers pulled out of the deal, explaining that it was too expensive, especially given their difficulties abiding by UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.

This is believed to have opened the door for Manchester United who are thought to be strong admirers of the Argentina international. Louis van Gaal added to this speculation in an interview with the Mail on Sunday.

“Now we have five No 9s and four No 10s and we don’t have wingers to play attacking width, not at the highest level, of Ronaldo or Di Maria or something like that. So I have to play also in another way and you have seen that.”

Van Gaal added, “It’s a strategy of Manchester United to buy players who are on the way up and getting better, but I only buy when I think we need to.”

This has obviously seen the speculation linking Di María with a switch to Old Trafford reignite but it remains to be seen whether Manchester United will want to pay the reported £55 million.
