River Plate might not have been as fluid as they have been in recent weeks but the result was the same in Mendoza last night. Germán Pezzella’s injury time header gave Marcelo Gallardo’s side a slender one goal advantage ahead of the second leg of the Copa Sudamericana clash with Godoy Cruz. Earlier, in La Plata, the draw pitted city rivals, Estudiantes and Gimnasia against each other but sadly despite the occasion of being the Clásico Platense the match failed to live up to expectation and ended goalless. They will meet again to decide the tie on September 18 while River host Godoy Cruz two days later.
