Vélez Sarsfield meeting Newell’s Old Boys should be one of the more attractive fixtures in Argentina but despite a win for either side meaning they would go top, the two sides played out a dull goalless draw in Liniers. Independiente closed the gap as they moved up to within a point of River with a third consecutive win. Federico Mancuello’s fourth goal of the season gave El Rojo a 1-0 win over Banfield, taking advantage of Lihué Prichoda’s early sending off. Estudiantes produced the best performance of the day with a 3-1 win over Belgrano in La Plata. A Cristian Lema own goal gave the home side a lead at half time and an improvised backheel finish from Román Martínez and a Ezequiel Cerutti goal completed a comfortable victory, despite Julio Furch’s consolation. Earlier in the day, Atlético Rafaela defeated Gimnasia 2-0 thanks to a close range Lucas Albertengo goal and a Nicolás Royán penalty.
