Lanús will now have to focus on catching River Plate in the Primera after their hopes of reclaiming the Copa Sudamericana were ended by Cerro Porteño in La Forteleza last night. Trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Paraguay, Óscar Romero provided the visitors with a perfect start with just a minute on the clock. The 22-year-old, who scored both last week, curled a wonderful shot beyond Agustín Marchesín to leave Lanús with an even more difficult task. A lifeline came from an unexpected source five minutes before half time when centre back Diego Braghieri galloped from half way through the heart of Cerro’s side and slotted the ball beneath Diego Barreto. While the goal provided the match with a memorable moment, Lanús were unable to find the crucial goal to take the tie to extra time and so Cerro Porteño take a place in this year’s Quarter Final to face either Boca Juniors or Deportivo Capiatá.
