Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona defeated Ajax 2-0 in Amsterdam and in the process moved level with Spanish striker Raúl on 71 goals as the top goal scorer in the Champions League. The Argentina captain headed Barcelona in front during the first half before sliding in a second from Pedro’s ball across the goal. The 27-year-old has scored his 71 Champions League goals in just 90 matches while Raúl needed 142 appearances to reach the same total. It is worth noting for a number of people who have enjoyed throwing around Cristiano Ronaldo’s statistics this season, that the Real Madrid striker has scored 70 in 106 matches. Messi on the verge of becoming La Liga’s top scorer and at the age of 27 it is frightening to think just how many records he could go on to break before he winds down his career.
