AC Milan may be having a difficult time in Serie A this season but they proved too strong for Copa Libertadores champions, San Lorenzo in the San Siro earlier today. The Italian giants were two-nil losers to Palermo on Sunday and currently sit seventh in the league but goals from Giampaolo Pazzini and Giacomo Bonaventura were enough to see off El Ciclón.

Whether San Lorenzo learned much from the defeat that can prepare them to face Real Madrid at the World Club Championships remains to be seen but certainly the same errors that have plagued them since lifting the Libertadores were evident.

The opening goal came midway through the first half and it was Milan old boy, Mario Yepes at fault. The veteran Colombian centre half was slow to react to a low cross from the left and allowed Pazzini to run across him and flick the ball past Leo Franco.

After a first half in which San Lorenzo were second best, there was an improvement after the break and although M’Baye Niang could have extended the lead when his shot cannoned off the post, it was Los Cuervos who should have been level. Martín Cauteruccio was guilty of missing a simple chance when the ball fell to him after hitting the post, only for his volleyed rebound to bounce over the cross bar.

With time running out, Milan made sure of victory when Giacomo Bonaventura tapped in a rebound after Leo Franco could only parry Fernando Torres’ initial effort.

San Lorenzo were not at full strength and are certainly not the side that claimed the Copa Libertadores months ago but improvements need to be made and quick if they are to make any kind of impression in Morocco.

AC Milan  2 – 0  San Lorenzo
