Newell’s Old Boys ended their run of six matches without a win with a deserved victory over San Lorenzo in Rosario last night thanks to goals from Maxi Rodríguez and Ignacio Scocco. El Ciclón had been hoping that they could build on their victory last weekend over Boca but a midweek friendly in Milan could not have helped preparations and once again Edgardo Bauza’s side limped to defeat.
Maxi Rodríguez gave Newell’s the lead after 37 minutes when Mauricio Tévez led a fast counter attack before unselfishly squaring the ball for the veteran Argentina international to stroke past Sebastián Torrico.
Martín Cauteruccio bundled in an equaliser five minutes after the break but the home side quickly reestablished their authority.
Former Sunderland striker, Ignacio Scocco hammered in a rebound after Torrico had kept out Maxi’s initial effort and with 10 minutes remaining, Maxi grabbed his second of the match. Left completely unmarked the ball eventually found its way to the Newell’s captain and he made no mistake, thumping a volley low into the corner.
San Lorenzo’s preparations for the World Club Championships could scarcely have gone worse as Bauza’s side look a shade of that which lifted the Copa Libertadores just some months ago.
