With promotion back to the Primera not yet guaranteed, Huracán may yet earn Copa Libertadores qualification after last night’s 2-0 victory over Atlético Rafaela in Formosa earned them a place in this year’s Copa Argentina. They will not be joined by fellow Nacional B strugglers, Argentinos Juniors, but will instead face Rosario Central after Juan Román Riquelme and his teammates were unceremoniously thrashed in San Juan.
Huracán were deserved winners in their Semi Final and although promotion must remain a priority, given the latest announcement from AFA, El Globo are now dreaming of a return to the Copa Libertadores. A first half goal from German Mandarino was followed by Ramón Ábila with 20 minutes remaining to wrap up the victory.
Later in San Juan, Juan Román Riquelme returned to the starting eleven for Argentinos Juniors but could do nothing as they were beaten 5-0 by Rosario Central.
Sebastián Abreu volleyed Central into an early lead and so it remained until half time as Argentinos struggled to make any impression. Riquelme’s only real moment was a heated exchange with Central manager, MiguelRusso.
After the break, Central ran away with the tie and goals from Franco Niell, Alejandro Donatti, Javier Correa and Hernán Encina ended the one sided affair. Central will go into the Final as favourites and after the rivals, Newell’s recent success, a cup win and Libertadores qualification would be a huge cause for celebration.
