Jonás Gutiérrez completed the next step in his recovery from testicular cancer as he returned to Newcastle and completed 88 minutes in the 4-1 win over West Ham under 21s. The popular figure attracted quite a crowd as he made his first appearance in black and white since being diagnosed with cancer and returning to Argentina for treatment. It is not clear whether Gutiérrez will play again for the first team but under 21 coach, Peter Beardsley was thrilled to have the 31-year-old available.
Beardley admitted that the 88 minutes left the Argentine midfielder exhausted but his presence in central midfield helped the young side run out comfortable winners over West Ham.
Gutiérrez said on Twitter after the match:
Thanks to all the fans for the support that you give through my illness, i am proud to be back. Good game and really happy. Thanks
