Mauro Icardi stole the headlines on Tuesday evening as Inter Milan earned a respectable draw against Serie A leaders, Juventus. Always one to divide opinion, the 21-year-old scored Inter’s second half equaliser with an excellent finish before his selfishness in front of goal almost caused teammate, Dani Osvaldo to attack him.
Roberto Mancini’s Inter are languishing down in eleventh and so the meetnig with league leaders Juventus was seen as one which might end up in a one-sided defeat. However, in Icardi, Inter have a striker who has an incredible knack of scoring against Juventus.
With five goals in the four matches that he has played against Juve, Icardi is becoming something of a pain for the champions and continues to stake his claim for an international recall.
Last night it was another Argentine striker who opened the scoring as Serie A’s leading marksman, Carlos Tevez tapped in after Arturo Vidal’s wonderful work.
Icardi had been an outsider throughout the first half but just after the hour mark, a clever run into the channel was found by Freddy Guarin and the youngster slotted past Gianluigi Buffon for his ninth of the season.
With Inter pushing for the winner, Icardi had already come close to doubling his tally before he found himself running at the Juventus defence with Lucas Podolski and Dani Osvaldo providing options. Icardi opted to shoot instead of sliding in one of his teammates and Osvaldo raced towards him in a rage. Thankfully Guarin intercepted the on-loan striker and prevented any altercation.
Perhaps as a result of his off-field conduct and the amount of newspaper headlines he has created, it is sometimes easy to forget that at 21, Mauro Icardi is still learning his craft. He is by no means the complete product but is equipped with all of the tools to be a top centre forward.
After the match the striker was quick to downplay any problem with countryman, Osvaldo and maturely admitted he had been in the wrong.
“I got it wrong as I should have passed to Osvaldo, but I saw a gap. These things happen out on the field and then everything is ok. But I was wrong, I had to pass it to him in hindsight. But we must stick together and fight and see where we are at the end of the season.”
