Ángel Correa is currently starring for the Argentina under-20s in the South American Championship but with the news that he will not be named in Atlético Madrid’s squad for the second half of the season, a loan move is on the cards. The wildly talented 19-year-old appears to have overcome his recent heart surgery and so his hometown club, Rosario Central are looking to bring him back to Argentina for six months.

After seven months out following a heart operation, you could excuse Ángel Correa for showing a few signs of rustiness. However, as the captain of the Argentina under-20 side, the attacker has shown an immediate return to the form that helped San Lorenzo win the Torneo Inicial and the Copa Libertadores and prompted Atlético Madrid to sign him.

Diego Simeone will no doubt be thrilled with Correa’s progress but with his squad’s quota of foreign players already full, the youngster will need a loan move to continue playing. A move to city neighbours, Rayo Vallecano had been touted but now Rosario Central hope to appeal to Correa’s fanaticism with his boyhood club to seal a temporary move.

Correa has made no secret of his support of Central even while playing for San Lorenzo. His hefty calf tattoo provided ample evidence of this, and certainly a transfer to Argentina would be a useful step in his recovery.

A party from Central has reportedly travelled to Uruguay to discuss the potential move with Correa as he prepares for the final two matches in the South American Championship.

Spanish newspaper, AS quoted Rodolfo Di Polina,Central’s secretary general: “It’s true — an assignment was carried out in this regard. But we must be cautious, because it is a complex possibility where the last word belongs to Atletico Madrid.”

Correa would be keen on the move but it remains to be seen if Simeone and Atlético want him returning to Argentina when they could well find a club in Europe. Needless to say there is other interest, with former club San Lorenzo and River Plate also sounding out Madrid over the move.
