Just a matter of a couple of seasons ago, Newell’s against Vélez was perhaps the marquee match of the Primera but with both sides regressing after changes of management, surprisingly Sarmiento versus Aldosivi was the game of Monday evening.
Sarmiento buoyed by their point at Independiente last Sunday took the lead midway through the first half thanks to Gervasio Nuñez but Aldosivi searching for their first points battled back well. Two goals in four second half minutes turned the match; the first a superb Roger Martínez strike from outside the box and soon after a smart José Sand finish. The lead lasted just a matter of minutes before Héctor Cuevas equalised from the penalty spot for his third goal of the season.
Banfield went goal crazy against Atlético Rafaela last week but reverted back to form last night as they were held to a goalless draw against Colón.
The visit of Vélez to the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa should really be a fixture that excites but unfortunately these are not the sides of Gerardo Martino or Ricardo Gareca. As goalless draws go, it wasn’t the worst but it provides an indication of where both sides are – below the level of those chasing the titles but comfortably above the bottom half.
