Gerardo Martino has named his 22 European-based players for the friendlies against El Salvador and Ecuador in the United States at the end of the month. Contrary to what had been rumoured there was no room for Paulo Dybala, Mauro Icardi or Luciano Vietto as Tata opted for a familiar looking squad and retained the services of Carlos Tevez.
Staying loyal to the same group of players is perhaps an indication that with the Copa América not far away, Martino didn’t want to incorporate any new faces into the squad. Certainly after the tournament when Argentina will be looking at options for the Olympic team in 2016, all three of those mentioned earlier will be in consideration.
Argentina play El Salvador in Washington on March 28th before travelling to New Jersey to play Ecuador on the 31st. The 22 players named will have some players based in Argentina added to it next week.
Javier Pastore (PSG)
Angel Di María (Manchester United)
Lucas Biglia (Lazio)
Roberto Pereyra (Juventus)
Ever Banega (Sevilla)
Enzo Pérez (Valencia)
Javier Mascherano (Barcelona)
Where’s Nico Gaitan
And Basanta
I think there is genuine competition there but my main disappointment is that I would have liked to see some (or one) of the youngsters get a call.
