Gimnasia’s impressive upturn in form continued on Friday night in El Bosque as they notched a third straight win and their biggest of the season with an entertaining 5-2 victory over Unión. It took just 18 seconds for the home side to take the lead when Ignacio Fernández slotted past Nereo Fernández with his left foot and the advantage was doubled in the 17th minute after Álvaro Fernández headed in at the back post. Jorge Rojas poked in a third before half time and Unión looked a little shell-shocked but they reacted well after the break when Lucas Gamba pulled a goal back with his head. El Lobo reestablished the three-goal lead when Maxi Meza slid in a simple fourth following an exquisite back-heeled assist from Álvaro Fernández and although plucky Unión grabbed a second through Emiliano Ellacopulos, Jorge Rojas added his second of the match to wrap up a convincing victory for Gimnasia. A three points that takes Pedro Troglio’s side up to eighth and a far cry from the side that looked utterly dispondent earlier in the season after defeat in the clásico.

Quilmes bounced back from two straight defeats to record a valuable 2-0 win in La Paternal against Argentinos Juniors, who are now looking a little vulnerable after what had been a promising start to life back in the Primera. Mariano Uglessich headed the visitors into a 13th minute lead and shortly before half time Alexis Canelo added a second on the break. There was little responce from Los Bichos and they limped to defeat in front of their own supporters.

Friday night’s other Primera match was in Banfield, where Matías Almeyda’s side were unable to do enough to defeat Sarmiento. The home side certainly had enough chances but like so many times under Almeyda’s stewardship Banfield were guilty of profligacy and the game ended goalless. Mauricio Cuero missed a decent opportunity in injury time and the striker appeared to leave the pitch in tears as Banfield made it three without a win.

Gimnasia  5 – 2  Unión

Banfield  0 – 0  Sarmiento

Argentinos Juniors  0 – 2  Quilmes
