Di María apologises to Man Utd after completing his move to Paris St Germain

Ángel Di María is perhaps not the most popular man in the red half of Manchester after finally completing his £44.3 million transfer to Paris St Germain this week. The 27-year-old endured a difficult first season in England and after failing to report to United’s preseason tour of the United States, Di María effectively forced through a move to Paris.

Di María signed a four-year deal with the French champions after completing a medical in Qatar on Tuesday and said “I am very proud and I can’t wait to wear the colours of Paris St-Germain.”

Given that United had paid a British transfer record £59.7 million it is substantial loss after just a year and although Louis van Gaal will be pleased to have ended the transfer saga it is disappointing to see their marquee signing of 2014 depart so soon.

Di María began life in Manchester in the sort of form expected from a record breaking transfer but quickly deteriorated and eventually lost his place in the side. Aware of his own failings El Fideo has written a letter to apologise and thank the club for the past year:

“I write this note to thank all the Manchester United family for the great support received during the year I’ve been part of this club.

“When Manchester United chose me as part of their team I felt extremely honored because I knew what this club means and how it trusted me. Nevertheless, I’m aware things didn’t work as we all expected and believe me, I feel really sorry about it.

“However in the career of a football player sometimes the unexpected and unwanted may happen. I can guarantee you it was not for trying. I did my best but football is not like maths: often a lot of things out of our control affect the way we feel and the way things turn out. I am sorry it did not work out as I would have wished in this amazing, huge club.

“I want to give special thanks to all the directors and management of Manchester United as well as to every member of the staff and colleagues as they gave me all their support. Also a special mention to all the fans who always trusted me and showed me their respect and love.

“Now is time to move to PSG but the glorious Manchester United club will be forever in my memory!

“Wish you all the best in the world. With best regards, Angel di Maria.”

A nice sentiment but rather hollow for United supporters.
