An emotional first match since the death of teammate Diego Barisone, Lanús met Nueva Chicago for a place in the Copa Argentina last 16. In what was a fitting tribute to the defender, who was killed in a road accident last week, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side ran out comfortable 3-0 winners to set up a clash with either Independiente or Deportivo Español. Gustavo Gómez netted twice in the first half from close range and Sergio González added a third courtesy of a spectacular volley after the break.
Later in the Cilindro de Avellaneda, Defensa y Justicia crept past Temperley on penalties to face Chacarita. Juan Dinenno had given Temperley the lead late in the first half after El Halcón were reduced to ten men and it looked to be enough before Dinneno was sent off with ten minutes remaining to even the numbers. Five minutes later, Mariano Barbieri forced an equaliser and took the tie to penalties and with all the takers successfully converting except for Temperley’s Ignacio Boggino, Defensa earned a 5-3 win.
Lanús 3 – 0 Nueva Chicago
Defensa y Justicia 1 – 1 Temperley (5-3 on penalties)
