The crushing 3-0 defeat to Nueva Chicago at the weekend spelled the end of Huracán manager, Néstor Apuzzo. Despite leading El Globo to the Copa Argentina last season and back into the Copa Libertadores, the Primera in 2015 has been a disaster and with the club languishing 26th in the table, Apuzzo called time. After Matías Almeyda and Omar De Felippe both rejected the opportunity to take over, 36-year-old central defender, Eduardo Domínguez has accepted the challenge.
Domínguez played in the embarrassing defeat in Mataderos on Saturday but with immediate effect has decided to hang up his playing boots and take the reigns as manager after president Alejandro Nadur failed to obtain his first choices.
Matías Almeyda has just left Banfield and according to Nadur is set on a move to Mexico while club legend Omar De Felippe will see out his contract with Ecuadorian club, Emelec.
These decisions meant Huracán were able to swiftly complete the details of Domínguez’s transition from player to manager.
Diego Simone did the same at Racing in 2006, immediately announcing his retirement to become manager and El Globo will be hoping that Domínguez has a similar impact on the world of management as El Cholo has had. Although it should be noted that Simone was far from a success in his first job and left Racing just some months later.
It is an important few months now for Huracán as they must look to push away from the relegation zone. At present only Nueva Chicago and Crucero del Norte stand between them and the Nacional B so Domínguez needs almost immediate results.
