River Plate marched out onto the Monumental pitch with their recent trophy haul in hand but the voyage back from Japan proved too much for Marcelo Gallardo’s weary squad and they fell to a 1-0 defeat against San Martín. A understandably lacklustre display was punished just after half-time when Facundo Pumpido thumped a low volley past Marcelo Barovero and even when Daniel González was shown a second yellow card moments later, River were still unable to make the most of it. With a man advantage for almost the entire second half, Gallardo’s side were unable to breakthrough and limped to only a second defeat of the season handing the advantage to San Lorenzo and Boca in the title race.
Rosario Central were also on the end of only a second league defeat of the season when they travelled to Quilmes. The league’s leading marksman, Marco Ruben gave Eduardo Coudet’s visiting side the perfect start with a superbly taken finish but Quilmes are showing a new found resolve and provided a late rally. Emanuel Morales toe-poked an equaliser with a little over fifteen minutes remaining and moments later they led when Rodrigo ‘Droopy’ Gómez’s free-kick was deflected off Pablo Álvarez and into the net. Claudio Bieler headed a third in the 86th minute and Quilmes were able to celebrate a third consecutive victory.
