With Funes Mori to Everton and Otamendi to Man City, River Plate dream of a Demechelis return

The transfer merry-go-round is in full swing and as things stand at the moment it is River Plate left with a key piece of their defence missing. Ramiro Funes Mori looks set to swap the Monumental for Goodison Park after River agreed an $8 million fee with Everton, but with a league title challenge, the Copa Sudamericana and the Club World Cup still ahead, Marcelo Gallardo is eyeing replacements. One possibility that the Argentine press are reporting is a return for Martín Demichelis, who might find playing time hard to comeby at Manchester City after Nicolas Otamendi flew in to seal a €45 million.

The transfers of Funes Mori and Otamendi are not complete but appear close. What is certain is that this would leave River Plate weakened, despite having Éder Álvarez Balanta and Emanuel Mammana to cover, and would knock Martín Demichelis further down the pecking order at the Etihad. Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala have started the Premier League season in fine shape and Otamendi, the new €45 million signing will be straight into first team consideration.

River are hoping to benefit from this and persuade Demichelis to return to the Monumental after he left for Bayern Munich in 2003. However, under contract with City until the end of the season it will take some negotiating. Despite not being a starting selection, with City competing on so many front, Demichelis could still play an important part.

Before Manuel Pellegrini brought Demichelis to Manchester, the 34-year-old had pondered an early return to River after his father died in a road accident. The Argentina international said at the time: “I am very sure that, when I finish playing, I will live in Argentina. At the moment I am analysing the possibility of returning because of the recent passing away of my father. That was a very strong blow.”

However much River may desire this it seems almost impossible until Demichelis becomes a free-agent at the end of this current Premier League season. He would be 35 at this stage and could well still squeeze a couple of years out of his career in Argentina.

    • Yes, he can look very good BUT he is also a tad slow and always has a mistake in him. At this point in his career he doesn’t look like a defender ready to seemlessly slot into a Premier League side and I think most who have watched him would be surprised if he was a roaring success in England.
I don’t think River would have wanted to sell this month but they know that the amount that Everton are offering is frankly irresistable.
