Rosario Central bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to Quilmes to record only a fifth win in their last sixteen matches but remarkably remain on the heels of the league leaders. Belgrano were the visitors to the Gigante de Arroyito and found themselves a goal down after 16 minutes when Walter Montoya volleyed Central in front from the edge of the penalty area. Just after half-time, Marco Ruben turned sharply in the box and was tripped by Cristian Lema and the league’s leading scorer dusted himself down to stroke Central into a two-goal lead. Sebastián Prediger almost immediately headed a goal back for the visitors but it did not prevent Marcelo Larrondo from wrapping up all three points for Central with a towering header. The result sees Central leapfrog Belgrano up into fourth but seven points adrift of San Lorenzo and Boca Juniors.
Having waited twenty matches for a first win in the Primera División, Nueva Chicago claimed back-to-back victories with a 1-0 win in Garupá against relegation rivals, Crucero del Norte. Never likely to be a classic despite being a ‘relegation six-pointer’ it was decided with just minutes remaining when Alejandro Gagliardi rose to nod Chicago ahead. The likelihood is that both teams will end up in the Nacional B come the end of the season but Chicago appear to be going down fighting.
Eduardo Domínguez began his reign as Huracán manager, less than a week from featuring as a player, and managed to earn a draw against a wasteful Lanús side. El Granate hit the frame of the goal on three occasions during the first half but Huracán also enjoyed their share of chances. Neither side will be particularly pleased with the result or their performances.
