Seven wins from the last eleven fixtures is the sort of form that would see a side qualify for the Copa Libertadores playoffs but Nueva Chicago paid the price for waiting until the 20th round of the Primera to claim their first win and on Monday afternoon even a victory against an in-form Quilmes was not enough. Alejandro Gagliadi struck first for the home side and the people of Mataderos began to believe that the miraculous escape was possible. A Chicago victory looked even more likely when Quilmes had Mariano Uglessich sent off before half-time but even with ten men, Facundo Sava’s side found an equaliser when Rodrigo Braña tapped in. Torrential rain across Buenos Aires disrupted the second halves of all the matches but El Torito found the winner that they needed. Mauricio Carrasco slotted the ball past Walter Benítez to earn a fifth consecutive win but all they could do now was wait to hear the news from Parque Patricios and Temperley.
Huracán needed to avoid defeat to a Belgrano side, already qualified for the Copa Libertadores playoffs and despite falling behind to a Lucas Zelarayán opener an awful Claudio Pérez own-goal brought El Globo level. A draw was suitable to both teams and amid the rain, neither could find a winner. Belgrano will face Independiente in Avellaneda in their Libertadores playoff while Huracán celebrated survival. El Globo must be cautious in 2016 after narrowly avoiding the drop and once more having to compete in the Libertadores, they cannot afford to neglect their league form.
Chicago’s last hope were Argentinos Juniors. Los Bichos had to beat Temperley to force a relegation decider but having won only three times away from La Paternal all season and having almost zero motivation, it always looked unlikely. No shots on goal in 90 minutes tells its own story and so Temperley can enjoy at least another six months in the top flight.
Nueva Chicago 2 – 1 Quilmes
Huracán 1 – 1 Belgrano
Temperley 0 – 0 Argentinos Juniors
No shots on goal…I got nothing
There was one more match in the regular season and predicatably Crucero del Norte lost. Aldosivi became the 22nd side to defeat the bus company after goals from Gastón Díaz and Jonathan Galván. El Tiburón take a place in the bloated Copa Sudamericana playoffs.
