When Daniel Angelici was reelected as Boca Juniors president on Monday morning, he revealed that controversial striker Dani Osvaldo was returning to La Bombonera. A deal had already been discussed that would see the 29-year-old terminate his contract with Porto and appear again in the blue and gold of Boca less than six months after departing. However, it would appear even Boca are wary of his reputation and his new deal includes a number of conditions to curb his wild ways.

According to the Argentine media on Tuesday the details of this new contract will prohibit Osvaldo from smoking and prevent him making appearances at nightclubs. Osvaldo’s brief spell with Boca at the start of the year was punctuated with regular cameos on stage with local rock band, La 25 and he courted controversy after a high-profile split from his long-term girlfriend and mother of one of his children. The acrimonious separation led to accusations of failure to pay child support and stories of Osvaldo’s infidelity.

It took Osvaldo just a matter of weeks to be involved in his first club scandal after being named as one of the players bringing girls into the team hotel and all of this has led Boca to approach with caution this time round.

Boca are adamant that they want the Italy international focused fully on football and so will restrict any other advertising or modelling commitments as well as his social media output.

Osvaldo got himself into trouble after Boca’s disqualification from the Copa Libertadores with a tweet directed at CONMEBOL and perhaps coincidentally the player has now closed his account on Twitter.

Osvaldo’s track record resulting in 13 changes of clubs in just ten years suggests that even these conditions will do well to keep him in line. Southampton supporters will certainly be sceptical after getting nothing from a club record signing that reportedly ended up costing the Saints in the region of £25 million.

Boca know that in Osvaldo they will be signing one of the top strikers in the Primera, who could form a lethal partnership with his friend Carlos Tevez. However, it might be easier simply to accept that Osvaldo is not going to change.
