With a second superclásico on Saturday, Rodolfo Arruabarrena fielded a far from full-strength Boca side against Estudiantes on Wednesday evening but El Vasco will be a little concerned by his squad’s form over this preseason. Lisandro Magallán was once tipped to be a future Argentina centre back but the 22-year-old has struggled badly in this triangular tournament and he was not alone. El Pincha reaped the benefits last night and goals from Gastón Fernández and Elías Umeres handed Nelson Vivas a second victory and as a result the Copa de Oro.
While Estudiantes’ first half opener was a fine counter that was swept past Guillermo Sara from the edge of the penalty area by Gastón Fernández, the second was a calamitous passage of defending that ultimately handed El Pincha victory. Magallán was first guilty of losing the ball wide on the left but when Nicolás Colazo picked up the loose ball inside his own penalty area, the full back had plenty of time to avert any danger. However, after hesitating to clear his lines, the ball was stolen off his toe by Carlos Auzqui and if left Elías Umeres with the simplest of tap-ins.
The good news for Boca was that Fernando Gago returned after his lengthy injury absence to play over half an hour in an effort to be ready for the start of the season. Boca have a lot of work still to do while Estudiantes will be pleased with how their preseason has transpired. It is far too early to tell but victories over Racing and Boca should give the squad a much needed confidence boost.
