Argentina’s summer friendlies were mired in scandal once again last night after the Clásico Platense between Estudiantes and Gimnasia had to be abandoned after a mass brawl on the pitch spiralled dangerously out of control. Carlos Auzqui had given El Pincha an early lead in Mar del Plata but it is the unsavoury incidents afterwards that will be remembered. Both sides were already down to ten when Estudiantes youngster Santiago Ascacibar was shown a red card for an awful challenge on Antonio Medina. The talented 18-year-old had barely seen his punishment when players and staff flooded the pitch and erupted into battle. Players traded blows and eventually police decided that there was no way that the game could continue.
One of those more prominant in the trouble was Argentina international goalkeeper Mariano Andujar, who was seen throwing several punches before being knocked to the ground and kicked by several Gimnasia players.
The 32-year-old said afterwards: “It’s shameful for us, for the people who came to the stadium and for those watching on the TV. We can’t finish like this. I don’t know what happened but this doesn’t do anyone any good.”
