There is still no sign of Lanús’ excellent start to 2016 coming to an end after only Sebastián D’Angelo in the Newell’s goal prevented El Granate from sealing victory by a margin greater than the three they managed. Jorge Almirón’s Zona 2 leaders should have been comfortably ahead after a dominate first half but had to wait until a minute before the break for Román González to bundle them in front.
The momentum remained with the home side after half time and González thumped in his second of the night after the Newell’s defence had valiantly blocked three prior efforts. Diego Osella’s side never looked like getting something from the game and with ten minutes left, José Sand smashed in his fifth for the season from the penalty spot.
In Sarandí, Arsenal’s fine home form continued with a third straight win in the Estadio Julio Grondona against Vélez. Sebastián Luna’s free kick midway through the first half was enough to take all three points but El Fortín will look back on Mariano Pavone’s glaring miss with the goal virtually open and feel they should have left with a point.
