The free-scoring, surprise package of the Primera, Defensa y Justicia were perhaps expected to make the most of Huracán’s poor domestic form and midweek Copa Libertadores exertions to extend their winning streak to five but as the Argentine Primera always manages to do, there was a surprise in Florencio Varela.

Goalkeeper Gabriel Arias gifted El Globo the lead when his inexplicably poor clearance fell straight to the impressive Cristian Espinoza, who dashed through on goal to slot in the first and as the visitors continued to frustrate their hosts, Ramón Ábila snatched a second. Alejandro Romero Gamarra slipped the ball into the path of the cult hero and Wanchope rounded Arias, held off Lisandro Magallán and rolled the ball into the net.

Considering relegation remains a threat and Huracán are currently balancing their Copa Libertadores commitments, victory over El Halcón is a significant result.

Belgrano were unable to build on their victory over Sarmiento last weekend and found themselves on the end of a 2-0 defeat from their trip to Bahía Blanca on Saturday afternoon. Cristián Díaz has had a profound effect on Olimpo and his unbeaten start to life as coach continued with a second home win. Joel Amoroso’s spectucular strike ten minutes after half time gave the home side the lead and with five minutes remaining Pablo Miguez slid in a second to seal the three points.

Defensa y Justicia  0 – 2  Huracán

Olimpo  2 – 0  Belgrano
