Argentina defender Marcos Rojo has told reporters back in his home country that when his current contract with Manchester United expires in 2019, the 26-year-old would like a return to former club, Estudiantes.

Currently with the national squad at the training centre in Ezeiza, Rojo told TyC: “I miss the club, my family and my friends. I want to return to Estudiantes once I finish my contract in England.”

This attachment to home clubs is common in Argentina and after seeing Carlos Tevez return to Boca Juniors last year and Sergio Agüero confirm his plans to finish his career with Independiente, Rojo is the latest to pledge the final part of his career to where it all began.

Hailing from La Plata, Rojo is a life-long Estudiantes supporter and joined their academy at the age of ten before rising through the ranks and playing a significant role in the club lifting the Copa Libertadores. His teammate from that side, Juan Sebastián Verón is now president and will give extra incentive to Rojo to return to La Plata.

Rojo was the youngest member of Alejandro Sabella’s Argentina World Cup squad and remains an important part of Gerardo Martino’s side. In 2019, Rojo will still be shy of his 30th birthday and so any move back to Argentina would probably be premature in a football and economic sense.
