A first blitz from Lanús and veteran striker Jose Sand blew away Unión in Santa Fe on Monday night and sent Jorge Almirón’s side two points clear at the top of Zone Two. Recent Argentina squad member Lautaro Acosta slotted El Granate into an early lead after a neat one-two with Sand on the edge of the box and shortly after it was two when Miguel Almirón’s low cross was bundled over the line by a comination of Sand and his marker. The visitors were flying and took full advantage of the Unión’s generous defending. Sand was left all alone to clip in a wonderful third on the counter and headed a fourth before the break. Such a commanding lead meant the second half was nothing more than a exercise in going through the motions but Lanús are increasingly looking like the real deal.
In La Plata, Gustavo Alfaro made a winning start to life as Gimnasia manager with a hard fought 1-0 win over Quilmes. Walter Bou’s scrappy opening after only five minutes proved to be the difference and has El Lobo well placed in Zone One, just four points behind leaders Godoy Cruz in fourth.
