Pablo Mussis’ stunning volley gave San Lorenzo a vital three points and victory over zone one title rivals, Rosario Central on Sunday afternoon. Marco Ruben had given the visitors an early lead from the penalty spot after Franco Cervi had been tripped but after a difficult week Los Cuervos stuck to their task admirably. Matías Caruzzo headed the home side level before the break and what was an evenly contested battle was eventually decided by a moment of inspiration from Mussis. With 55 minutes on the clock, Central failed to clear their lines and the 23-year-old thundered an unstoppable left-footed volley past Sebastián Sosa. El Ciclón held on for all three points to create a packed title race in zone one and crucially give Pablo Guede a little breathing space.
While the top of zone one is as close as ever, zone two was looking far more cut and dry with Lanús opening up a six point lead. In order to keep pace it was crucial that Estudiantes won in San Juan against San Martín and thanks to two goals in two minutes from Lucas Viatri, El Pincha did just that. Viatri’s first, a thunderous header was swiftly followed by a simple tap-in after Gastón Fernández had rattled the crossbar. A fifth consecutive victory for Estudiantes cuts Lanús’ lead to three points but the two sides are looking good for Libertadores qualification.
