A difficult week for Colón which saw Darío Franco leave as manager and barra bravas invade training, punch leading scorer Alan Ruiz and lead to the 23-year-old effectively quitting the club was made worse by clásico defeat to rivals Unión on Saturday afternoon. Lucas Gamba slotted the ball past Jorge Broun with five minutes remaining to break the deadlock and complete a double over El Sabalero.

In some way the humiliating 3-0 defeat in this season’s earlier clásico was the turning point in Colón’s season, as things have quickly unravelled since that loss. Preparation for Saturday’s clash in the Estadio 15 de Abril was effected by the unfortunate episode with Ruiz and Ricardo Johansen taking temporary charge after Franco was relieved of his duties.

In spite of these distractions, Colón battled and made life difficult for the home side but should have found themselves behind at half time. Unión felt they had a strong claim for a penalty waved away by Patricio Loustau but that aside Emanuel Britez missed a glorious chance when he sidefooted the ball wide with the goal wide open.

El Tatengue remained the better side and were given a boost midway through the second half when Pablo Vegetti was shown a red card for an elbow on Rolando García Guerreño.

It looked as though the numerical advantage was not going to pay dividends but in the 85th minute Lucas Gamba played a quick one-two with Claudio Riaño and stroked the ball into the bottom corner.

Neither side have anything to play for in their respective zones but Unión have well and truly taken the bragging rights in this Transición.

Unión  1 – 0  Colón
