Racing’s recent form suggested that their Copa Libertadores last 16 clash with Atlético Mineiro would bring goals. Oscar Romero and Lisandro López are always likely to create chances for La Academia but there was equal expectation that Lucas Pratto and Robinho would find holes in the unpredictable home defence.

There were certainly chances at either end but Racing will feel that they could and perhaps should have been taking an advantage to Belo Horizonte next week. The home side enjoyed the better of the first half and thought they had taken the lead when Leandro Grimi poked the ball past Victor only for an offside flag to deny him.

The Brazilians posed a threat on the break in the second half, but it was Racing that came closest to finding a breakthrough. López crashed a shot against the woodwork and in the last minute Sergio Vittor headed over unmarked from six yards out.

Racing should have Gustavo Bou available again next week and undoubtedly have the firepower to score in Brazil. Should they be able to do so, the away goal would put La Academia in the driving seat but the tie remains too close to call.

Racing Club  0 – 0  Atlético Mineiro
